Web Developer Resource Index: OWL
The Web Ontology Language (OWL) is the essence of the Semantic Web. It is a vocabulary of RDF, and various other XML languages. The goal is to achieve a universal method of exchanging information in a machine-readable format, as opposed to the mostly human-readable format that is now characterized by simple HTML documents.
Ontology is an abstract concept with its roots in philosophy. It is an attempt to thoroughly describe a hierarchical system of categories, instances of objects that fit into these categories, and their relationships. A representation of such an ontology is known as a conceptual schema.
