Web Developer Resource Index: C
The history of C Programming and the Unix operating system are tightly integrated.
C was born from necessity as the first Unix developers grew frustrated with
writing the operating system in PDP assembler (machine) language. C is a very
simple, compact and low-level programming language—leading some to
describe it as a “high-level assembler.” As such,
software produced from it is extremely fast and efficient, making it the dominate
language for system and server software, and even many applications.
The vast majority of the other languages, servers, applications, database systems and other software described in this Resource Directory are written in C. For all of these reasons (and because C is also highly portable) the Apache Web server, for instance, will complile on a wide variety of platforms and operating systems with ease.
