Web Developer Resource Index: Wikis
Wiki is the Hawaiian word for “fast” (as in swift,
rather than the abstinence from food). In the Hawaiian culture, doubling the
word to WikiWiki gives it emphasis (as in very fast). The term Wiki can also be
thought of as the pseudo-acronym “What I Know Is.”
The first Wiki on the WWW, created by Ward Cunningham ca. 1995, was
the WikiWikiWeb.
Sometimes referred to as Groupware, the hallmarks of a Wiki system include:
- A Web site with content that is collaborative, or community-driven.
- Content is added or edited using a simplified markup language.
- Content is created or edited from any browser in a sandbox.
- A sandbox allows the author to preview changes before publishing them.
- Changes are stored in a version history and can be reverted.
- A Wiki may be entirely open to the public, or require authorization.
- Due to its nature, a Wiki is a growing, shifting database of information.
- Links to other pages on the Wiki are easily created and encouraged.
Perhaps the best-known, highly trafficked, and at times, controversial, Wiki on the Web is Wikipedia. Due to its high-profile, Wikipedia is often the source of internal power struggles.
Wikipedia is just one project managed by the Wikimedia Foundation.
- Wiktionary — dictionary
- Wikiquote — quotations
- Wikisource — library
- Wikibooks — textbooks
- Wikispecies — flora and fauna
- Wikinews — news articles
- Wikiversity — learning community
And speaking of struggles, I had a hard time deciding where to place this category. In the end I decided to create it as a sub-category of PHP because the best known Wiki package, like many others, is written in PHP.

MediaWiki+FCKeditorIntegrates the rich browser-based FCKeditor HTML editor into MediaWiki. But rather than producing HTML, it generates Wikitext. This way you have the best of both worlds, since you can use the GUI controls and still edit the markup manually in the sandbox. [1841]
