Web Developer Resource Index: PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL is an open source, object-oriented relational database management system (ORDBMS). PostgreSQL has a long history, starting with the Ingres project out of the UCB. It later evolved into various commercial database systems, including Informix, Sybase, and even (gasp) Microsoft SQL Server.

Fast forward to 2004 when Ingres was now owned by Computer Associates (CA), who released the system as open source, and the current PostgreSQL Project was born. The system includes the ability to define column types, and a powerful set of rules for extracting data from related tables. See the link to Wikipedia at the bottom of the page and the official PostgreSQL Web site for more details.

PostgreSQL has a more liberal BSD-style licensing policy than MySQL’s GNU GPL and commercial licenses.
