An Operating System is the software that controls a computer. It is responsible for the hardware, including storage such as memory and disk drives, input devices, output to a screen or printer and the file system where both the system and user resources are maintained. It is also responsible for executing system software (services) and user applications (programs) such as Web browsers, word processors and games.
